Following on from yesterdays news of the latest Banksy piece, the 14th Street Clock Rat, the world renowned street artist has now also unveiled his next piece. Located on Houston Street near Lower East Side, Manhattan, the mural features the face of Turkish artist, Zehra Dogan, behind bars with jail bars tallying the number of days of the sentence with the words ‘Free Zehra Dogan’ at the bottom. Above the mural is the actual painting Zehra Dogan was imprisoned for which featured a ruined Turkish city. She received 2 years, nine months and 22 days in prison in Turkey for the artwork and was charged for being affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers Party. In a recent statement to the New York times, Banksy said,Β βI really feel for her. Iβve painted things much more worthy of a custodial sentence”.
