Tesla Raises Car Prices in Canada Amid Tariff Uncertainty

Tesla (TSLA.O) has announced a significant price hike for its vehicles in Canada, effective February 1. According to Tesla’s Canadian website, the price of its popular Model 3 will rise by as much as C$9,000 ($6,255), while Model Y variants will increase by up to C$4,000. Prices for all Model S and X versions will also go up by C$4,000.

The electric vehicle manufacturer, which imports cars to Canada from its factories in the U.S. and China, has not provided a specific reason for the price increase. Tesla has yet to respond to media inquiries about this unexpected change.

The move coincides with escalating trade tensions between Canada and the United States. U.S. President Donald Trump, backed by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, has threatened to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has stated that his government is prepared to respond with counter-tariffs while acknowledging the uncertainty surrounding trade relations.

Adding to the complexities, Canada already imposes a 100% tariff on electric vehicles imported from China, which includes Tesla cars manufactured at the company’s Shanghai factory.

This price adjustment could impact Tesla’s market competitiveness in Canada, where rising tariffs and import costs are adding pressure to the EV market.
