When people go out and purchase a second strap, they tend to go for black, brown, or blue. Unfortunately, a beige watch strap is not a very popular choice because it doesn’t have to solve that problem. It softens a watch. Watching sports on a steel watch gives it a cool, cold tech style, and the sand-colored strap gives it a warm and relaxed appearance that is not loud.
What beige actually does for a watch
Sand tones are in the same family as khaki, stone, and cream. They absorb the warm colors of an aged lume or cream dial, and they bring a vintage touch to bright steel. This effect is similar to that of changing from a bright white room to a warmer one in a modern watch.
It is also a subdued hue. The neutral beige will not stand out as much as red or orange will and is easier to wear than people think, since it is a neutral color.
Which watches suit it
A vintage watch, particularly one with a cream or aged dial, is the best match. The strap complements the dial, and the entire watch is cohesive.
Field watches make another obvious sense, as do pilot-style designs, as the sand and khaki colors are rooted in a similar practical, field background. Black dials are also stylish, and the beige tone adds casual, sort of retro flair.
Steel cases are very effective. Beige is also a good color choice for a gold case, but it will be a subtle match and will benefit from a matte or aged finish.
Beige is less suited to a bright polished case with a white or silver dial – the strap may appear somewhat muted in this pairing. It is also not really suitable for formal timepieces.
How to pair it with your outfit
One of the easiest straps to wear is the beige one, as it will fit into earthy, natural color schemes.
Denim, white, navy, and olive are all good. It looks good with all brown and tan shades as long as they don’t match each other. The navy shirt and sand strap are a clean, simple outfit, and so are the gray sweater and jeans.
It is best during warmer months, but not just in summer. Fall hues such as rust, olive & cream colors complement well. It’s a bit light in winter against dark coats and layers, but some people prefer this contrast.
The only caution is not to match it too closely with a beige shirt or trousers, in which it could disappear into the clothing.
Rubber, sailcloth or striped nylon
There are 3 main materials for beige, each of which is used for a different habit.
Rubber is the practical choice for swimming, travel and sport. It can be rinsed clean easily, and is waterproof, sweatproof and sunscreen-proof. That has an impact with a light color; the marks stand out more. The quality of rubber doesn’t get stiff; it is more flexible than it becomes; some even feature a textured upper that resembles fabric.
The sailcloth strap is a woven fabric and more structured than nylon. It’s a solid feel and appears somewhat more polished, which makes it appropriate if you’re wearing your watch to work and then out on the weekend. Sailcloth that is beige in color is a natural type of canvas and is well suited for field watches.
The lightest and most casual is striped nylon. The stripes add variety to the color, creating a sense of playfulness and breaking the monotony. It dries rapidly, is easy to change, and works well in the summer. Pay attention to the stitches and edges; low-quality nylon can easily fray.
If you are uncertain, inquire if the strap will become wet. If yes, then select rubber. Otherwise, sailcloth or nylon can be used.
Will it get dirty?
Light colors give hints of dirt earlier than dark ones, but beige is still better at concealing dirt than a light one is. There are some small marks that blend in, and a bit of natural ageing can complement the color.
Some bad habits don’t spoil it. Rinse off salt and chlorine from the beach or pool after use as this can stiffen the material. Allow to dry in air; heat has a tendency to damage it. Be aware of any dye transfer from new dark jeans or bags which may rub on light straps. Rotate straps as wearing the same strap each day will wear it out quicker.
Is it worth adding if you already own black?
Yes, if you want more variety. Black is the practical and beige is the casual color. This is a significant shift for such a simple piece of equipment: the same watch can be serious in black and easygoing in sand in just a few minutes.
