Electric Mustang Mach-E outsells gasoline Mustang for first time

In a historic shift, the Ford Mustang Mach-E outsold the gasoline-powered Mustang for the first time in 2024. Ford sold 51,745 units of the electric crossover, surpassing the 44,003 sales of the gas-powered pony car by over 7,700 units.

This represents a 26.9% sales increase for the Mach-E compared to the previous year, while traditional Mustang sales dropped by 9.5%. Supply chain challenges, including limited availability of the 2.3-liter turbo-4 engine, contributed to lower gasoline Mustang sales, according to Ford.

Despite the decline, Ford remains optimistic about the gasoline Mustang’s future. Brand manager Joe Bellino emphasized its continued profitability, citing strong demand for special editions and accessories.

The Mach-E’s success came during a record-breaking year for Ford’s EV lineup, with 97,865 electric vehicles sold in the U.S., a 35% increase. The 2024 Mach-E lineup expansion, including the off-road Rally model and generous incentives such as free home charger installation, helped boost sales.

While some enthusiasts debate whether the Mach-E is a “true Mustang,” its popularity signals a growing consumer shift toward electric performance vehicles. Ford’s diverse Mustang lineup now balances tradition with innovation, ensuring both models remain central to its brand identity.
