WhatsApp, owned by Meta, announced today that it is adding support for passkeys on iOS. This will allow WhatsApp users to check in to their accounts on iOS devices using Face ID, Touch ID, or their device passcode.
Passkeys replace traditional passwords, and because device authentication is necessary, they prevent internet attacks such as phishing. A passkey eliminates the possibility of intercepting a one-time SMS or authentication code and stealing passwords.
Passkeys are more convenient than passwords because they require only a short Face ID or Touch ID scan to log in. To enable WhatsApp passkeys, go to the app’s settings, select the Account section, and then hit “Passkeys.”
Apple has supported passkeys since 2022, and they are compatible with devices running iOS 16 and later, iPadOS 16 and later, and macOS Ventura and later. Many firms have added passkey compatibility, including X (previously Twitter), Google, TikTok, PayPal, Best Buy, Microsoft, PlayStation, and eBay.
