According to a new rumour, Apple’s 2023 iPhone will have a titanium chassis with curved rear edges instead of the current squared off design. The back edges of the iPhone 15 will be rounded to create a new border, similar to the bottom edges of Apple’s latest 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, according to Twitter user @ShrimpApplePro.
Despite the use of titanium, the iPhone 15 will “still have a back glass,” according to the leaker, who has previously provided accurate information, though @ShrimpApplePro cautions that the information is “still very early to take it as it is.” This isn’t the first time we’ve heard rumours about an Apple titanium iPhone.
Earlier this year, iPhone 14 rumours suggested that the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max would be housed in a titanium alloy chassis, but that did not come to pass: The chassis of all iPhone 14 models is made of aluminium and stainless steel. Apple, on the other hand, has recently investigated the viability of titanium casings for its products, including patents related to the use of processed titanium with unique properties for future MacBooks, iPads, and iPhones.
If the latest reports are correct, Apple will be using titanium for the first time in iPhones and iPads. Although the company has used titanium as a casing material in recent Apple Watch models such as the Apple Watch Ultra and the physical Apple Card, the latest iPhones and iPads are made of stainless steel and aluminum.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple may replace the iPhone 15’s “Pro Max” model with a new “Ultra” model, following the Apple Watch Ultra naming convention to indicate a high-end product. It’s unclear whether the titanium case rumour refers to a specific iPhone 15 model.
