China is set to impose a ban on 15W wireless chargers, affecting popular models like Apple’s MagSafe and Qi2.
Starting September 1, new regulations from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology will restrict wireless charging equipment to specific frequency bands: 100-148.5 kHz, 6765-6795 kHz, and 13553-13567 kHz.
The current 360 kHz frequency used by Apple’s MagSafe technology will no longer be allowed.
The new rules are designed to prevent interference with critical radio communications, particularly in the aviation sector, and to maintain airwave order.
As a result, only chargers operating within the approved frequency ranges will be permitted for sale in China.
This ban will impact Apple’s 15W wireless chargers, which use the 360 kHz frequency. However, chargers bought before the regulations take effect will remain usable.
Apple’s lower-power 7.5W chargers, which operate at 127.7 kHz, are not affected by the new rules but offer slower charging speeds.
The updated regulations reflect ongoing compliance challenges for foreign electronics in China. With the new rules, Apple may need to adjust its technology or face restrictions on sales in the region.
