After upping its charging rates earlier this year, Electrify America is shaking things up yet again. Instead of having the same coast across the country, EA stated in an email to consumers that it will shift to station-specific pricing. Besides station-specific pricing, EA will reintroduce idle costs for people who sit at charging stations after their vehicle has already attained 100% charge.
Electrify America did not detail or provide a price range for station-specific pricing, but you’ll be able to see for yourself once the switch is flipped on the adjustments. Currently, Electrify America charges either a flat rate per kWh or a rate based on the duration of time plugged in.
Electrify America claims that paying the monthly charge will allow you to save around 25% on all charging. Having stated that, Electrify America has informed us that the membership fee would be increased from $4 to $7 per month.
We inquired about idle costs, and Electrify America has agreed to charge charger hogs $0.40 every minute of extra time spent on the charger after their car reaches 100%, except the 10-minute grace period. That, in our opinion, is the best news of the day, as it will ensure that people get off the fast charger as quickly as possible to allow someone else on.
