Apple has been putting a lot of effort into making its operating systems and devices more secure, as evidenced by the difficulty hackers had developed a jailbreak tool for iOS 15. But those interested in tweaking iOS can now rejoice as the palera1n team has released a jailbreak tool that works with both iOS 15 and iOS 16.
The checkm8 exploit, which was discovered in 2019, is the foundation of the Palera1n jailbreak. Since the exploit was discovered in the bootrom of Apple’s chips, it is regarded as being “unpatchable”. Of course, Apple can alter other components of the system to stop hackers from utilizing this flaw. However, there is nothing the company can do to fix it permanently on older devices.
The new jailbreak tool is said to be compatible with all operating system versions, including iOS 15.0 and iOS 16.2, which were made available to users this week. Uncertainty surrounds the tool’s compatibility with the just-released iOS 16.3 beta.
It’s important to note that there aren’t many devices that can run iOS 16 and are impacted by the checkm8 exploit. Accordingly, the following iPad and iPhone models can be jailbroken with PaleArin on iOS 16:
- iPhone 8 and 8 Plus
- iPhone X
- iPad 5
- The iPad 6
- iPad 7
- iPad Pro (1st and 2nd gen)
The jailbreak tool is still experimental and developer-focused, the team cautions. The procedure still requires a Mac or Linux-powered computer and is quite difficult. Another thing to keep in mind is that, as of right now, not many tweaks are compatible with iOS 16.
