Kia Recalls 80,000 Niro EVs and Hybrids Over Airbag, Seat Belt Issues

Kia America has issued a recall for 80,255 Niro, Niro EV, and Niro Plug-in Hybrid vehicles manufactured between August 10, 2022, and December 13, 2024, citing safety concerns regarding airbag and seat belt deployment, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The issue stems from potential damage to the floor wiring assembly beneath the front passenger seat, which may prevent airbags and seat belts from deploying properly during a crash or cause unintentional side curtain airbag deployment. Although no crashes or injuries have been reported as of January 10, 2025, Kia emphasizes the importance of addressing the defect to avoid increased injury risks.

Affected vehicle owners will receive notification letters by March 14, 2025, instructing them to visit a Kia dealership. Dealers will inspect, repair, and install protective wiring covers free of charge.

This recall is part of Kia’s ongoing commitment to vehicle safety, following previous recalls like the 2024 EV6 recall due to power loss risks. For more information, owners can contact Kia’s customer service at 1-800-333-4542 (reference number SC332) or visit the NHTSA website.

This recall highlights Kia’s proactive approach to addressing potential safety issues, ensuring peace of mind for its customers.
