NHTSA Investigates 1.4 Million Honda and Acura Vehicles for Engine Issues

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into potential engine failures in over 1.4 million Honda and Acura vehicles.

This probe covers several models with 3.5-liter V6 engines from the 2016-2020 model years, including the Acura MDX, TLX, Honda Pilot, Ridgeline, and Odyssey.

The investigation follows Honda’s November 2023 recall of approximately 249,000 vehicles in response to reports of a manufacturing defect in the engine’s crankshaft.

The defect, caused by improperly ground crank pins, can lead to premature wear and failure of the connecting rod bearing, resulting in complete engine failure.

While Honda’s initial recall addressed certain vehicles, the NHTSA has since received 173 additional complaints about similar issues in other models not covered by the recall.

One driver also reported a minor crash linked to the engine issue. Honda has expressed its commitment to cooperating with NHTSA throughout the investigation.

The NHTSA’s probe will determine if additional vehicles should be included in a recall, aiming to address any safety risks and ensure thorough resolution for affected owners.
