Pakistan is making a big move towards green energy with plans to set up 3,000 Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations across the country.
Malik Khuda Bakhsh, the Convenor of the Energy Standing Committee at the FPCCI, announced the project, which will be done in partnership with a well-known Chinese company and the Government of Pakistan.
The EV charging stations will be installed along the Peshawar to Karachi motorway, making it easier for people to switch to electric vehicles. This project is expected to bring $350 million in foreign investment.
In the first phase, $90 million will be spent on setting up the charging stations. By February 2025, an additional $250 million will be invested in manufacturing EV-related equipment within Pakistan.
This initiative is expected to reduce the country’s reliance on imported fuel, save foreign exchange, and help to lower pollution levels.
Speaking at a ceremony in Karachi, Malik Khuda Bakhsh shared that Chinese investors are also interested in other energy projects in Pakistan, such as Thar Coalfield and renewable energy. These collaborations could lead to significant technology transfer and more investment opportunities.
The Sindh government has assured full support for these initiatives, offering help with documentation and land arrangements.
This is a positive step for Pakistan towards a cleaner, greener future, encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles and strengthening its energy sector.
