According to students, less than a month before the new interns were scheduled to begin, Tesla withdrew summer internships, leaving aspirational college students frantically searching for other professional plans.
Three weeks before their scheduled start date at the electric vehicle business, two students who claimed to be prospective interns at Tesla withdrew their offers, which they shared on LinkedIn on Wednesday. The number of withdrawn offers is still being determined.
The billionaire emailed on Monday to announce the dissolution of two top executives’ divisions and their departure. As Business Insider revealed last month, some Tesla employees feel like they’re in flux and are afraid they could be the next to go.
University of Texas at Austin communications student Brook Gura told a similar story. She said she received a call on Tuesday informing her that the internship offer had been withdrawn. Gura attributed this to the most recent layoffs at Tesla.
Technical lead at Tesla Diana Rosenberg also pointed the finger at the layoffs in a LinkedIn post, expressing her “great sadness” at losing a potential intern on her team and pleading with her professional network for support.
Every year, Tesla employs over 3,000 college students for internships, the company announced in its 2022 impact report.
