According to one of Mopar Insiders’ sources, Jeep plans to modify the powertrain lineup for the two-row Grand Cherokee and three-row Grand Cherokee L next year. Jeep parent firm Stellantis will make a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder the standard engine for the Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L starting next year. The Grand Cherokee will still be available as a PHEV.
The elimination of the V8 and the replacement of a four-cylinder with a six-cylinder are not new; as Mopar Insiders points out, the Ford Explorer powertrain range begins with a 2.3-liter four-cylinder producing 300 hp and 310 lb-ft, and Jeep is not far behind with the turbo 2.0-liter in the Wrangler, which produces 270 hp and 295 lb-ft. Offering the smaller mill as the sole engine would be surprising.
The two—and three-row models are expected to receive minor changes next year before a comprehensive redesign in 2027. This could be seen in the Grand Cherokee’s transition from today’s WL platform to Stellantis’ STLA Large platform.
We will be waiting for official word from Jeep when the 2025 Grand Cherokee goes on sale, and we would be astonished if they do not mention the Hurricane for that model year. We have contacted Jeep to request a comment; we will update the post if we receive a response.
