According to Axios, Elon Musk has asked Twitter engineers to start working on an updated version of Vine that might be released before the end of the year. Four million people responded to Musk’s poll he posted on Twitter yesterday, and 69.5 percent of them agreed that Vine should be brought back.
Vine was a popular video app that Twitter purchased back in 2012, before TikTok. Twitter eventually decided to discontinue the app in 2016 after usage of it gradually declined. Users can record and share six-second looping video clips using the app Vine.
Vine could face competition from TikTok, a well-known video app. Vine’s code base has not been modified since it was shut down, and Twitter engineers have been instructed to look into it. According to one source, it “needs a lot of work.”
On Friday, Musk completed the $44 billion purchase of Twitter. He then installed himself as CEO and dismissed a number of top executives, including previous CEO Parag Agrawal, CFO Ned Segal, and policy lead Vijaya Gadde, among others. Musk also dismantled Twitter’s board of directors; he is now the only director remaining.
Since the acquisition, there have been numerous rumours about Musk’s plans for Twitter, and it has been asserted that he intends to make significant staff reductions. Musk allegedly intends to charge $20 per month for a verified account, according to rumours that surfaced this morning but have not yet been confirmed.
