Ford Mustang, Bronco inspire new uniforms for hometown Detroit Lions

Detroit Lions Ford-inspired uniforms

DETROIT — The Lions unveiled new uniforms Thursday evening. To complement the team’s new look, the team paid homage to the automotive sector using the Ford Mustang Dark Horse, Bronco off-roader, and F-150 Lightning pickup truck.

The Lions, fresh off their most successful season in decades, drew inspiration for their new style from Ford Motor Co., the family firm that owns the team, and its iconic vehicles.

Lions officials explained that the stripes on the jersey sleeves resemble those on the hood of a Ford Mustang, while the blue collars represent the region’s industrial base.

The Bronco, which returns in 2021 after being out of production since 1996, inspired Nike, which created the jerseys. The home jerseys, in the team’s historic colors of Honolulu blue and silver, with white block numerals, are reminiscent of the look worn by the 1990s Lions, led by Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders.

A white F-150 Lightning complemented the team’s new white road outfits, but the Mustang Dark Horse and the Lions’ new alternate black jerseys were undoubtedly crowd favorites. The alternate jerseys for particular games were presented in front of an 8,000-person audience at Ford Field, one day after the Mustang’s 60th anniversary, with the Dark Horse serving as the backdrop to wild cheers.
