Twitter Goes down Just mins After Launching Expanded Tweet Counts

Twitter Goes down

A large number of users are having trouble tweeting this afternoon, just hours after Twitter announced a significant increase in the maximum character limit to 4,000. Although it’s not yet obvious if the two are connected, the date follows a noticeable increase in lengthy tweets. Nearly 10,000 complaints of users experiencing issues with Twitter have been seen by Down Detector as of the time of writing.

Many people encounter the following issue when trying to tweet:

We apologize for not being able to submit your Tweet. Do you want to try again or save this tweet for later?

The problem notices that other users are getting reads, “You are over the daily limit for sending Tweets.” It’s interesting to note that scheduling a tweet appears to be a solution for the outage, and for the time being, tweeting through API is still functional.

Notably, today’s activity was greatly increased by Twitter’s announcement of the 4,000-character super-sized character limit expansion. But as of right now, it’s still not apparent if that’s what started the outage.
